The UK’s Business Hot Spots

By Jonathan Harvey June 23, 2023

In terms of business activity, London has long since reigned as the UK’s de facto hub. However, considering recent changes and development in areas outside the country’s capital, many new business hot spots have been popping up in other urban across the UK.

When it comes to a destination that’s good for business, many factors come into play. However, some of the most important are access to talent, quality of life, infrastructure, and the overall business landscape. Keep reading to discover just some of the nation’s cities outside London that are doing these things the best:

Birmingham

Birmingham

This city in The Midlands ranks high regarding infrastructure; as part of its 20-year plan, Birmingham is quickly becoming a super-accessible city as its mayoral officials work hard to better connect Birmingham to the UK and the outside world. As well as infrastructure, Birmingham is also known as a rising talent pool thanks to its large pool of university students.

This steady source of growing talent is essential for businesses looking at their future hiring plan. Finally, the location of this city makes it an attractive business hot spot – being in the middle of the country means the city is great for train travel to and from most locations in the UK!

Glasgow

 Glasgow

Glasgow is another city offering trades great value for money out of London and has been currently voted as one of the most affordable cities in the UK and Europe. 66% cheaper than London and 8% cheaper than the London of the North, Manchester, this city provides the best possible offers.

Edinburgh

 Edinburgh

Located in Scotland, Edinburgh is also emerging as one of the best business hot spots in the UK. According to new research by Management Today, the city of Edinburgh has been crowned the best British city for business outside of London. Additional factors such as the vibrance and diversity, proven track record, innovation-focused, and high-quality of life also make it different from other cities.

Coventry

Coventry

Coventry and Warwickshire are well-known cities for having one of the fastest-growing economic areas in the UK. The reports from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) show that, since the year 2008, when the recession hit the world, Warwickshire has managed to achieve the biggest increase in productivity.

Another fascinating aspect of the city is it is just 60 minutes away from London, so in case any business decides to get shifted to London, it’s easier for them in comparison to other places. While London still owns the credit of being the biggest business hub in the United Kingdom, companies are setting a new trend of leaving the hot spot and setting up their kingdoms elsewhere.

Why are Companies Moving-out of London?

The cosmopolitan metropolis of London is not only loved by tourists but also has been the favorite destination for trade. But what are the reasons behind the companies switching the place? Let’s find out!

  1. Less Expensive – What could be a better reason than capital saving? Towns outside London charge comparatively economical rent fees. While maintaining an office in London is expensive for all the obvious reasons.
  2. Extra Space – You get more room for your office for the same or lesser amount of rent than in London. It also makes the environment look less hectic, and calming helps employees in being more productive.
  1. Low-maintenance Cost – Smaller the city, the limited the maintenance costs will be. If you want to refurbish or renovate your office, your work will be done at a lower price than in London.
  1. Post-Pandemic Downsizing – Since Covid-19 hit the world, the trend of work-from-home and downsizing of companies increased. Companies also took advantage of remote working as it saved them a fortune from electricity bills to rents, etc. The main focus now is on establishing headquarters for major operations and encouraging people to work remotely.

These are the primary reasons why companies are shifting their interests from big cities to small towns.

Conclusion

The metropolis of London, rich with history, culture, and ideas, is never going to lose its crown of being a City of Business though some factors are affecting the organizations to reach out to new urban areas. At the same time, the perks of having an office in London are nowhere to be compared with businesses going out.
